1,900 Tourism Policemen Needed

December 28, 2006 18:37 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 28 (Bernama) -- The Royal Malaysian Police needs 1,900 tourism policemen to be stationed at 99 locations favoured by tourists throughout the country.

Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Datuk Mohd Najib Abdul Aziz, said the need arose because of the Visit Malaysia Year 2007 when more policemen would be required to provide protection for foreign tourists.

"We currently have 266 tourism policemen throughout the country but the number is insufficient," he told reporters after a visit by Deputy Information Minister Datuk Donald Lim Siang Chai to Bukit Aman here.

Lim met Najib for one hour to inform him of the need to place tourism policemen at specific places.

Najib said the number of tourism policemen would be added according to the need of the time.

He said the police force had applied to the Public Service Department to increase the number of tourism police personnel.
