Firefly To Launch Kota Baharu-Johor Baharu, Subang-Hat Yai Flights

KUALA LUMPUR, March 15 (Bernama) -- Community airline, Firefly, is introducing two new routes -- Kota Baharu-Johor Baharu (JB), from Apr 26 and Subang-Hat Yai, from May 2.

In a statement Thursday, Firefly said the Kota Baharu-JB service will have flights every Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday and Subang-Hat Yai every Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday.

Shorthaul Malaysia Airlines and Firefly chief operating officer, Ignatius Ong, said the new flights were to meet the needs of business and leisure customers from Kota Baharu who had requested for direct flights with convenient timings to Johor.

Ong said the load factor on the Subang-Hat Yai route will comprise Malaysians as well as foreign tourists.

Ticket sales to these new destinations will commence on March 16 and can be purchased from website www.fireflyz.com.my, Firefly's airport and city ticketing offices and through travel agents.

Fly direct to Koh Samui from KL

KUALA LUMPUR: Now you can fly direct from Subang airport to Koh Samui on Firefly's new route for only RM180.

Firefly, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Malaysia Airlines, is flying direct from Subang airport to the Thai island four times a week.

The service was launched recently with an inaugural flight by the airline's new ATR72-500 turboprop aircraft.

Firefly head of communications and marketing Angelina Fernandez said: "We can now expect many first-time leisure travellers to Koh Samui from KL, now that we are connecting the capital of Malaysia directly through this route.

"More people will be able to experience what Koh Samui has to offer. We are also honoured to be able to encourage the people of Thailand to visit KL and Malaysia."

She said this new route would enable expatriates living in Malaysia to do their "visa runs" and at the same time take the opportunity to explore Malaysia via the new route.

"We expect Koh Samui to be one of our top Thailand destinations and we are happy to provide the service, which is why we have holiday packages via Firefly Holidays," she said.

Firefly Holidays packages start from as low as RM180 per person to RM 2800 for a three day, two night stay.

Firefly Holidays also takes group bookings of ten people or more. The airline also customises packages to suit the needs of clients.

Malaysia Gets Nod For More Landing Rights To France

TOULOUSE (FRANCE), Oct 31 (Bernama) -- Malaysia has received additional landing rights to France by October next year, Transport Minister Datuk Ong Tee Keat announced Friday.

Speaking after witnessing the first delivery of AirAsia X's first brand new Airbus A330 here, he said the French government approved the third freedom rights for the seven times weekly KL-Paris sector currently operated by Malaysia Airlines.

He said Malaysia also received the greenlight for the fourth freedom rights from Kuala Lumpur or two other secondary airports in Malaysia except Subang to Lyon, the second largest city in France.

Ong said Malaysia also received the greenlight for the fifth freedom rights involving the stopover at certain cities, that is Kuala Lumpur-Paris-London and from Kuala Lumpur to any destinations east of Paris to Paris.

According to the minister, the frequency will be discussed further and the rights are subject to the number of passengers not less than 80.

He said for the past six months, his ministry had been stepping up efforts in seeking new routes.

AirAsia Keen To Operate From Subang Airport

SEPANG, Nov 22 (Bernama) -- AirAsia Bhd is keen to operate from the Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport at Subang, a move that it says will enhance business and make the airport more competitive regionally.

AirAsia chief executive officer Datuk Tony Fernandes said today the company will do the necessary to help develop Subang airport.

It will be a good idea for the government to allow AirAsia to operate from Subang Airport, he told reporters after the company's annual general meeting here.

AirAsia had, among others, suggested that it too be allowed to operate from Subang just like community airline FireFly, a subsidiary of Malaysia Airlines (MAS).

Yesterday, Air Asia X chairman Datuk Seri Kalimullah Hassan was reported as saying that Malaysia needs a larger low-cost carrier terminal (LCCT) soon to accommodate the increasing passenger volume if it wants to become the regional hub for low-cost travel.

Fernandes said the Subang airport operations, apart from attracting more foreign investors to locate their businesses in Malaysia due to easier access to the Federal Capital, will also make it easier for foreigners to come here for medical, education and tourism reasons.

"Let's make Kuala Lumpur a relevant hub. If we are good and become a strong aviation player, there are so many aspects we can cater for, especially in the medical, tourism and education industries," he added.

"It is a fantastic cause-and-effect business. If we have our own airport close to town, it will attract more foreign investors and more visitors to Malaysia."

Fernandes also said that if AirAsia is allowed to operate from Subang Airport, the LCCT at Sepang can be converted into a cargo terminal.
